The Joker fans have shared their hopes for Steve Coogan to play Alfred in upcoming sequel as footage resurfaced of comedian impersonating the butler. 

The trailer for the highly-anticipated sequel was released on Tuesday, revealing the film would be released in the UK and US on October 4.


Joker: Folie à Deux stars Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, a fellow asylum inmate who forms a deadly romantic relationship with him. 

In The Batman franchise Sir Michael Caine stars as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne's much-loved butler, confidant and father figure. 

As Steve's appearance in the trailer surprised fans, a clip from his hit show The Trip has resurfaced, in which he and Rob Brydon battle it out to see who can perform the best Sir Michael impression.

Sharing their thoughts on X, fans wrote: 'If this scene in the Joker 2 isn't just Steve Coogan & The Joker seeing who does the better Michael Caine impression then what the f*** are we even doing here.'

Joker fans were left utterly baffled after British icon Steve made a surprise cameo in the trailer for the film's sequel.

The actor, who is best known for his character Alan Partridge, really caught the attention of UK audiences when he appeared in the clip. 

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, viewers showed their enthusiasm for the English-Irish actor featuring in the film - with some saying he was the reason they would go and see it. 

They wrote: 'Steve Coogan was the last person I expected to turn up in the Joker 2 trailer, but here we are!';

In the thriller, Joaquin reprises his role as Arthur Fleck, also the Joker, as he meets his match in Lady Gaga,as Harley Quinn.

The world is a stage' is the tagline for the Warner Bros. jukebox musical, which features 15 covers of 'very well-known songs' such as Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz's track That's Entertainment made famous by Judy Garland in 1960 - according to Variety.

Joker: Folie à Deux has been rated R by the MPAA 'for some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality, and brief full nudity.'

Todd Phillips' $200M-budget sequel - hitting US/UK theaters October 4 - will also feature Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey.

The 53-year-old filmmaker has been teasing several stills from his DC Comics supervillain origin tale on his official Instagram account.

'We're just finishing up post-production on it. This movie is a big swing and it's going to be really surprising to people. I'm so excited for everyone to see it.'

The 1981-set first film Joker made history in 2019 as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, amassing $1.079B at the global box office. 

Joker: Folie à Deux will be released in cinemas later this year on October 4.
